LFW Craig Lawrence SS13 Collection

On Monday the Lady Gaga wearing knitwear designer Craig Lawrence was showcasing his SS13 collection in the  Portico rooms in Somerset House.  I didn’t actually have an invite, but I had an empty space between the Christian Blanken SS13 and DAS Collection SS13 shows and I knew this one would be fantastic to snap.

The very nice lady holding the guest-list said it would be fine to come in and to be honest, I think I was very lucky as the room was jam packed!

True to form the collection was eye catching and well… not something I would nip to the shops in, but beautiful to photograph. The theme was aquatic with inspiration taken from phosphorescent plankton that glows in the ocean at night. the entire collection was silver and white and the stretched knitwear was to imitate sponge and urchins.

Waists were cinched in with perspex bumbags – or fanny packs for readers across the pond (always makes me giggle).  In the finale the lights went down and UV lights beamed down on the models to show off the fiber optic woven into the knitwear. Being the novice catwalk photographer that I am, I fumbled with my camera settings and didn’t get the shot. I must learn to be prepared for anything.

That’s it for my catwalk coverage and I am going to have a bit of a moan now.  I would have liked to include Pam Hogg on here as it was quite a big speaking point for LFW (naked Alice Dellal) – but even with a ticket, I couldn’t get in.  in fact hardly anyone with a standing ticket did!

Outside the venue was absolute ciaos.  Of course brands have to oversubscribe their shows to insure a packed out venue, but either this was hideously oversubscribed – using people and wasting their time (I waited an hour!), or practically everyone who was invited turned up.  Or my guess, people with seated tickets printed off more than one.  There wasn’t a guest list in sight and yes the tickets were just email print offs! annoying, I was really looking forward to seeing her collection, she is dubbed as the next Vivienne Westwood. waaaaa!

Oh, Kylie your photos of this are so beautiful! I only got to see the collection on vogue.com as we couldn’t make it down for fashion week, I thought it was a striking collection then, but seeing your photos & all the close up details makes me appreciate it so much more, such gorgeous craftsmanship! The fiber optic part sounds amazing too, I would have loved to have seen that, I bet it looked awesome!

Aw thank you 🙂 loved the chance to be able to do more catwalk photography, I really love it and the thrill and speed of it. Hopefully will be able to do more. It was really great to see in person, was very lucky to be able to see it x

How rubbish that things were so poorly organised! I get why shows oversubscribe but how many ‘extra’ tickets must they have sent out?!

On another note, and I swear I’m not just saying this because I didn’t receive many invitations – I’m so over fashion week. I’d rather look at the collections on Style.com than fight for a seat and be looked up and down by the (large majority) of blogger-haters and cliquey bloggers. Where did the fun go?!

So disappointed about the Pam Hogg one, although from what I heard, people were literally squeezed in like sardines and there was plenty more outside. I really do think guests just printed off more than one ticket.

I think fashion week is what you make it. Most of my invites were through me photographing for Tell Us Fashion, so I have treated my blog more like a portfolio for the last week or so. I like the way The Sartorialist does Catwalk photography from a different perspective, so aimed for it to be like that. Yes the one time I said I was a blogger to a photographer in the pit, I did get a frosty conversation. Even if I am not photographing for anyone in future, I will just sit on the floor by the photographer area, best view & you get to sit down 😉 hehe
