I don’t think I have ever jumped out of bed fast enough at a 5am alarm. I love travelling (apart from the actual travelling) and visiting new places. So I was thrilled to be invited along to a press trip organised by Task PR to the Marc Cain head offices in Stuttgart. I have been all over Europe, but I have never visited Germany. I was excited to get a glimpse into the country and the fashion it produced.
The group included fellow blogger Julia from Stylonylon, stylists and shopping/fashion assistants and editors from the mags (Company, Marie Claire, Grazia, Stylist, Instyle & Harper’s Bazaar). Much like bloggers, press types all seem to know each other already.
We all met at Heathrow for an early flight ready for a whirlwind day of activities. The German Wings flight took just an hour and a half and as soon as we arrived, we were coached to the Marc Cain head offices for Lunch and a tour.
The Marc Cain building was a spectacle in itself. As our tour guide Thomas Herter explained, The Marc Cain image of perfection needed to be across all aspects of the brand – including the building. It sets the mood for employees and as a result the brand has a less than 1% fault return rate against an industry standard of 4-5%.
Marc Cain also want to appeal to cream of the crop employees and make Marc Cain a desirable place to work. He stated that most fashion graduates want to travel to Berlin, London or Paris. What would make these talents want to travel to this remote place in Germany?! Honestly this building was beautiful, I want to work there! They had Zen Gardens, loungers around a lake and a beautiful outside eating area. A great canteen and comfy seating areas throughout.
What also helps that rate is the fact the design to manufacturing is done in house. Whereas most of our clothes now are made in Asia and its harder for brands to keep an eye on quality control. Marc Cain can keep a close, beady eye on all manufacturing. Thomas told us that until recently, even though the majority of the knitwear was made in Germany. They had to send the last part of the process to Romania, resulting in a legal requirement of labelling stating ‘Made in Romania’. With the 60million euro investment in top of the range machinery and refurbishment; they now have a flat-knit, seamless system. They now don’t have to ship the knits to Romania for sewing together. Marc Cain can offer knitwear that is 100% made in Germany.
We got to check out German efficiency in action with our little headsets on. What was slightly scary was how tidy every ones work stations were and the silence. I Joked with Thomas asking if it was because they had guests or are they always this good. He looked at me like I was mad and laughed saying “yes of course” to the latter. Maybe it is just the British that are loud and naughty.
After the hour 1/2 tour we all sat outside for a drink to wait for our coach to take us to the hotel. The mowbot kept us all entertained for the 15 minutes while we tried to figure out how it knew what to do and what stopped it falling into the pond. We were convinced that the invasion of the A.I. was soon upon us.
The coach arrived and we were taken to the hotel for 45 minutes free time before we made our way to the Stuttgart beer festival. Andre from Task informed us that we would have a little surprise on the bed and that we MUST wear it…you can see that on my Instagram.
With my breasts pushed up to my ears looking like a bar wench we made our way to the beer festival.
Also I wanted to point out that the photos above are taken with my Canon eos 6D the ones below the Canon eos M. So glad I purchased this little camera, I love the photos it produces and perfect for times like this when I don’t want to carry around a DSLR. Plus YAY to little bags for once!
The photo taking on my part stopped before it got really messy! I cannot put into words or photos how crazy this place was. When we walked into the beer tent, I kept trying to take photos to show how massive it was, but it just wasn’t happening. You can view some of the craziness I took on video.
We were dancing on the tables, necking back shots, drinking A-LOT of beer (of course). It really was a jolly! A few of us had a mishap on a carnival ride. There was more than a few grumpy faces in the morning – the sunglasses were on!
Thanks to Task PR and Marc Cain for having me I had the best time- Do check out the Marc Cain Website for SS14 collections online now
